USC Hybrid High School is a college preparatory public charter high school in Downtown LA currently serving 9th and 10th grades. We combine a traditional “no excuses” model with a blended learning model that embeds technology across the curriculum and school day. Our goal is to develop self motivated and disciplined learners who are prepared to graduate from top four year universities and who will go on to use their college degrees to effect Positive Multigenerational Change.
The school is defined by three core pillars:
Positive Multigenerational Change
We are driven to make a positive multigenerational change for students and community through connecting rigorous annual project themes of “know yourself,” “know your community,” “know your nation,” and “know your world” to the school’s overarching mission to give students a deep sense of purpose. In addition, the school’s staff is driven to contribute to our profession by working with USC to publish the school’s findings to inform the teaching profession and school design of future blended learning schools.
The school is organized around answering a critical question: “How do we increase the time our students are highly successful doing rigorous work?” We use a demand/supply side model of learning and inquiry that has produced excellent results in other high-performing charter schools year after year within a traditional school model. On top of this core, the school puts technology at the center of students, teachers and curriculum to enhance and extend the effectiveness of our management, motivation, instructional and curriculum practices. Half of the lessons teachers plan will be self-paced and individualized for students — an innovative approach to teaching that blends high-quality teacher-led instruction with diverse, rigorous online content, curated by excellent teachers, to keep students engaged and working at their level. Students will spend the other half of their learning time in a more traditional classroom setting that still retains a high level of rigor and engagement for all learners.
A Network Designed to Innovate
USC Hybrid High School is the flagship campus of the Emagine Public Schools network. Emagine, the charter management organization (CMO) that operates USC HHS, is organized around the vision of becoming the preeminent national blended learning CMO. As the network prepares for growth, the focus is on ensuring that the network of schools retains the conditions necessary to continuously innovate and grow through clear quality control responsibilities by the network and autonomies for the campuses to allow for rapid innovation.
